How are you going with that rebuild, Todd? Yeah, good.
Hello, Kenny. Good morning.
Ken, I’ve finished the chainsaw.
OK, can you bring in the ride-on mower and give it a service for me, please?
Is that the red one outside? Yes. The Ranger. It’s got to be finished by lunchtime.
I’m doing an apprenticeship in outdoor power equipment
and mechanics and soon I’ll be a qualified tradesman.
I enjoy working with mechanical equipment, taking things apart and checking for any faults.
There’s always lots to do – spark plugs, air filter and oil levels.
Most of the machinery’s light and easy to work on.
There’s always a range of equipment to service so that improves my skills.
It’s important to wear ear protection and safety
glasses when you’re working with loud machinery.
We test equipment in a soundproofed room which
has exhaust fans that take care of any fumes.
I also attend to customers’ needs, explain what has to be done and the costs involved.
Just about there. Too easy. Good on you.
Thanks, Sean. Thank you. Thanks very much. We’ll see you later.
I service all types of different equipment.
Some of these machines work fairly hard so there’s
always a few extra repairs that need to be done.
It’s good to have a bit of variety in your job.
When something unusual comes into the workshop, it’s always a challenge.
Sharpening lawnmower parts requires specialised equipment.
Each machine has a particular task to do so correct alignment and adjustment is essential.
You learn many skills while you’re doing your training.
I also repair and recondition second-hand equipment
for hire shops, contractors and garden services.
In the future, I think it would be good to have my own business
but for now, I’m enjoying my work and learning my trade.
Having an apprenticeship is a great way to start your career.
You learn on the job and from qualified people.
If you’re interested in an apprenticeship then the
best way is to do a pre apprenticeship course at TAFE.
I’ve always had an interest in mechanical equipment so for
me, working with machinery is something I’ll always enjoy.
