>> SKEE JAY:
Hello Internet world, I am The Skee Jay and this is Pull List Friday!
So every Friday, I'm gonna make a video about the comic books that I pulled this past week,
for instance this week I only pulled three books: Superior Spider Man 28, The Flash 28,
and The Wake 6.
I'm gonna try to finish with the best book and make that my "pick of the week."
But I will talk about all three of them: what I like, what I didn't like, and where I think
the book might be going... I might do that last part, I don't know.
Now, the first book I want to talk about today is Superior Spider Man #28, it is also Goblin
Nation Part 2, as we see on the cover is the Green Goblin playing chess and knocking out
all of the Spiders that are pawns and kings. I guess the Spider King is ... (Spider-Man!)
Anyway,
*laughing*
So, what I like about this book is that it is action packed the entire time, it felt
like I was watching an action movie, like I was watching a Spider-Man movie.
And that's how a lot of the Spider-Man books feel, especially with Dan Slott as the writer.
The book picks up right after the Goblins attack Spider Island. At the beginning, people
are unsure about what happened; was it terrorists? And then people kind of realized it was the
Goblins and they were screwing with Spider-Man, which is not good, especially not in New York
City!
We kind of see the beginning of Doc Ock's hold on himself and his city are starting
to unravel.
And what we also get in this issue is a little bit of a deeper look into the return of Peter
Parker, which we all know is coming. SPOILER, but it's nothing.
We see Peter Parker in Doctor Octopus's head, and he's hiding himself in Doc Ock's memories,
so we see Otto Octavius as a child. Which is, I think, a really interesting view. I've
never seen it before, I don't know if its in any other issues or not, but in this issue
we see Doctor Octopus's childhood, which is - I don't want to give too much away, but
it is a very sad childhood.
And what really gets concerning is that Peter Parker starts to believe that he is Otto Octavius.
So we have Otto Octavius in Spider-Man's body, and Spider-Man in Otto Octavius's mind, thinking
that he's Otto Octavius and that he grew up with this childhood.
And it gets - well I think it's going to get really confusing. But also really, really
interesting where we see the two worlds really collide. And obviously its going to lead to
Peter Parker's return.
But for now it's just really interesting to see and to experience.
Now, one thing we saw in the issue two weeks ago, Superior Spider-Man 27, was the first
appearance of the new villain, "Monster." Now, how long Monster is going to stay in
the continuity of Spider-Man remains to be seen. Probably not very long, she could be
here forever, I don't know.
She is a new Goblin and she is pretty badass. She's a confidant of Otto Octavius slash Peter
Parker, so she knows all of his secrets and she's using that against him now, and it's
really exciting to see her, she plays kind of a major part in this book as we see, already,
Spidey's friends start to turn on him.
There was a final twist at the end with Lily Hollister which, I don't want to give too
much away, but it is very - they left it on a pretty major cliffhanger in regards to Lily.
Overall I think Superior Spider-Man 28 is a great read. I highly recommend picking it
up, even if you're not a Spider-Man fan or if you are. If you want to get into Spider-Man
I think this is a very good issue even though it is the second part in a pretty major storyline.
The first page always has a recap of where you are in the story. So what happened last
issue, what happened in previous issues, this even has what happened in issue 1 and before.
So, you get to find out a lot about the backstory. If you're just picking up Superior Spider-Man
for the first time, this book would be an excellent choice. Superior Spider-Man 28,
it's got the Green Goblin playing chess on the front.
If you want to get into Spider-Man, I recommend definitely starting with Goblin Nation as
we inch towards the return of Peter Parker, I think it'll be in April, so.
Superior Spider-Man 28, Goblin Nation Part 2, I think you should definitely pick it up.
The second book I want to talk to you guys about today is The Flash #28. It is actually
- well I think its the first issue with a new creative team: Brian Buccellato and Patrick
Zircher, artist, or writer and artist respectively, so I was really looking forward to see what
they would do with this character.
And this issue overall, unfortunately, is not the best Flash that I've read. I have
read worse Flashes, but this one doesn't really quite do it for me.
It does lead the way - it's the first part of a new storyline, so I gotta give 'em some
time to get into it because it starts the storyline really well, at least in regards
to the final couple pages where some really awesome stuff happens.
No action, really at all in this issue. What we see is The Flash using his speed, not for
fighting, which is what we've become accustomed to seeing him do, but he's actually using
his speed to learn, which is something that we don't really see a lot of. We know he can
do it, we talk about it sometimes. If we're talking about "what's the Flash really good
for?" one of the things that comes up is that he reads really fast, he has almost an infinite
knowledge because he can read so fast.
Which really helps him in particular battles.
What he's using it for in this particular issue is that he's trying to find - I'm holding
it backwards, is he's trying to find clues as to who this Fletcher guy is, and what Deadman,
as you can see in the cover, if you can see I know there's probably a glare, I don't know.
What his (Deadman's) fascination with Fletcher is, and we see a flashback to what looks like
the 1800's, to a mine where we see people mining, not unlike Minecraft where you mine
for coal and stuff, but I guess this is more of a real life situation with mining.
The flashback is actually right on this page, right in the middle, you can open up right
to it, there's some murders, some very bloody stuff if you're into that, it's actually a
really cool page.
And I think you're gonna like the ending of the issue as well. If you're a fan of the
Flash, I think you're gonna like where the storyline is going. I don't think it's the
best issue to start with if you're looking to get into the Flash. I would actually relegate
that back to issue 21, where the Reverse Flash storyline that just wrapped up starts. So
issues 21 through 26, if you can pick them up then I'd highly recommend doing that, because
those issues are very good, we learn a lot about Reverse Flash and about Flash himself
in these.
Again, Flash #28 is not my favorite book of the Flash, not my favorite book this week...
That comes later.
It is a nice little read. If you're into the Flash, I think that this might be a pretty
good book for you.
Now, the third issue I want to talk about, which is my Pick of the Week, is The Wake
#6 by Scott Snyder, the writer, and Sean Murphy, the artist. I've been waiting for what seems
like forever for the sixth issue to come out. It is the beginning of the second part of
the storyline.
It's a ten issue series, and number 6 finally came out. They separated it into the first
five are the prequel and the next five are the actual story. It's kinda similar, something
like that. Anyway, we finally get to begin the second
part of the storyline. Where we left number 5, Dr. Archer and her team of submarines were
trapped by the underwater vampires that were obviously trying to kill them, and it just
cuts off. We were left wondering "what is happening, how do they escape, what ends up
happening next?" And issue 6 doesn't quite answer those questions, in fact it creates
more. So it is - we are reading the Lost of comic books.
This issue is set 200 years in the future. The first 5 issues were set in the present
day and the next 5 are gonna be set 200 years in the future of today where there are Tree
People, it's almost a post-apocalyptic comic book.
So what we get is the effects of Global Warming, it pushes the entire coast of the United States
in what looks like hundreds of miles. Florida's gone, Jersey's gone. D.C. is referred to as
"the old capitol?" with a question mark. Some fascinating stuff.
I like seeing alternate realities of our future, or what could possibly be a real reality of
our future, I don't know I'm not in the future.
But what is cool about this issue is that it shows the vampires that we saw in the first
five issues not quite as dominant as they were in the issues that took place present
day. It's almost like the humans figured out how to deal with the vampires, so they're
still a threat but they aren't really a danger of killing off the human race like we once
thought they were.
It looks like they're in a zoo or something, we see the vampires in a zoo in particular
issues.
So this issue is very fascinating, we get to learn a lot about what's happening in the
story, it's such a fascinating story and that's why it's my pick of the week.
It is short though, I think it's only 15 or so pages, I didn't count the amount of pages
it was, but it does cut off at a very awkward spot, I thought. And then it goes towards
- not a sequel - towards a preview of a new issue, a new story that's gonna be coming
out, I think by Scott Snyder and Sean Murphy as well.
And one thing that The Wake fans will love is that, at the end of this issue, we have
not seen the last of Dr. Lee Archer! The star of the first five issues, she is alive and
kicking and I promise you that much. 200 years in the future, I don't know how it happens
but somehow it does and I'm so excited to find out how. I hope you guys are too, if
you're gonna get any books this week, make it The Wake #6, this issue is not like - the
story is not like any story you've read before, not like any movie you've seen before.
Scott Snyder and Sean Murphy do an outstanding job with The Wake. It is a book that I will
continue to look forward to for the next 4 issues, and hopefully they just don't disappoint.
I don't think they will, Scott Snyder is an outstanding writer and Sean Murphy is doing
a great job with this book.
So that's all I have for you guys today! I only got three books today: Spidey, Flash,
and The Wake. If you're gonna get anything, get The Wake, but if you're into super heroes,
obviously Spider-Man is the way to go.
There are a ton of other issues that came out today. I was looking in my comic book
store and almost everything on there was new this week, new this week, new this week, and
I was like "wow you got a lot of new books today, I only got three of them, but there
are so many more that I wish I could have gotten.
Now for next week's issues, I want to give you a little preview on what's coming out.
I'm gonna be picking up four books next week: Avengers AI from Marvel, and then Forever
Evil, Green Arrow, and Detective Comics from DC. Nothing from Image because my comic book
store, just for some reason doesn't buy a lot of Image Comics. Also from Vertigo I would
like to get Hinterkind. He doesn't order that, I've tried to get him to do it, he just won't
do it, I don't know why.
Maybe I'll be able to find that in another store, I'm not sure. But for now it's just
Avengers AI, Detective Comics, Green Arrow which has just been an outstanding book for
the last, I don't know, six - seven - eight months.
And also Forever Evil 6. Now, Forever Evil's storyline I think has kinda started to run
stale for me. I'm gonna read #6 and see how it goes but ultimately I just kinda want it
to end and to get back to normal.
So anyway guys, thank you for watching my first issue - or my -
