Yearbook is the biggest project at AAS
Our team of twenty students look through one hundred thousand pictures trying to find the best for our 350 page book
Every single year we start the yearbook from scratch. So we start off with an InDesign file and we plan and we have the whole team
work together on different layouts that we use for the book.
But before we start that we create and we brainstorm a theme
and we do that as a team together
and this year we saw that all the technological advancements around the world and in our school
applies to the yearbook so for that reason we
chose our theme
which is Digitizing Our World
Every year we create the entire book around our theme.
Everything starts with our theme
so this year we tried to incorporate the theme as much as possible
and this year one of the ways that we did this is through extra content.
Last year we started with QR codes that allowed
videos to play from printed pages
this year we decided to embrace our theme and take this to the next level with augmented reality.
Augmented reality is feature that allows us to bring
pictures to life such as
with sound, videos and moving objects.
It basically works by holding up a smartphone over a picture and then
it will appear on your phone.
Augmented reality fits perfectly with
this year's theme which is Digitizing our World. It's all about technology.
Every single year we try to do something different in yearbook.
Two years ago we had a 3D holographic cover
and last year we had a metallic shiny foil cover.
This year
we'll finally get our hard cover.
This year for the yearbook cover, which I designed, we decided to take
inspiration from our perception and idea of the future.
We wanted to see how we could portray the idea of the future
within our yearbook cover design and we did so with this.
Sadly our original cover design was actually a portrait of Mr. Spence
with lens flare
gradually passing across his face
but sadly that was vetoed out for
this other cover, this more serious cover.
But it's okay Mr. Spence, we still love you.
One of the things that we did this year
was that we took art
throughout the school
and we took it and we scanned it
and we put it onto the pages.
As you can see, we have a finalized first grade page right here
and this is with everything shown
but to show the idea
of the artwork that we used
we actually took specific layers and we used one layer
as a certain piece of art that was created by one of the students from the class
to sort of personalize each page.
And as you can see, as we slowly take off layer by layer
then you can see that we're just left with this penguin right here that was created by
one of the children in the class.
One other thing that we want to talk about was the back cover of the yearbook.
So we started out with
a digitalized version of Russia
and that was this but then we realized that it looked kind of boring
and it didn't really have any pizzazz, you know?
So and we wanted to make it look more like the front cover of the yearbook
with all of the lights and the glowy effects
so then we ended up with this finalized version right here.
And this is actually a digitized version of Russia
each of the squares representing
the borders of Russia.
and as you can see this little diamond right here in the middle
that's actually Moscow. So we decided to make it more
personalized for Russia and to show that it's also
very connected
to Russia and AAS actually being in Moscow.
And also one more really cool thing that we managed to do with the cover was
last year we had QR codes but this year we decided to do augmented reality
so if you download an app on your iPhone or phone
and you go over the back cover, you'll be able to see
a video,
as is being done demonstrated right now.
That was one of our examples of the augmented reality that we managed to input into the yearbook
this year
and we hope you check out the rest because they're really awesome
and we think it adds a really nice dynamic to the yearbook.
