Salvador da Bahia is the third largest city in Brazil after São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
It is the capital of the northeastern state of Bahia, with around 3 million inhabitants,
and was the capital of Brazil until 1763. For the tourists from all over the world the
historical center Pelourinho has been restored. Since 1985, the old part of the town is a
UNESCO World Heritage Site. Typical are the colorful shops, the costumes of the women
of Bahia, the Capoeira and everywhere music.
Impressive are the blue-painted tiles called azulejos, and the golden decoration in the
Franciscan church and monastery Convento e Igreja de São Francisco from the colonial
period in 1686.
Salvador is built on different height levels of a mountain range, which divides the city
into an upper city (Cidade Alta) and a 70 meters lower city (Cidade Baixa). To get from
one part to the other, you can use the Elevator Lacerda. At the lower exit is the colorful
market hall, the Mercado Modelo.
