A male entered the water at Ala Moana beach park
and began swimming after his daughter's flotation device
that was being carried out
to the sea by wind and current
after swimming approximately one hundred yards
the tired male abandoned his attempt to retrieve his daughter's floater
and began floating on his back
exhausted
and unable to send back to shore
the male began calling out for help
as he struggled to stay afloat
Officer Mark Jines
was on duty and outfitted in scuba gear while attending an underwater
forensic investigation class
heard the victim's call for help
and immediately swam out to the victim's location
once there
he reassured the victim
activated his dive emergency flotation device
and brought him safely to shore
the grateful male was shaky but unharmed
left with his daughter after thanking Officer Jines
there's no doubt that Officer Jines saved a life that day
the certified class instructor later contacted HPD
and related that in his opinion
the victim would have certainly drowned
if not for the quick actions of Officer Jines
his brave actions
are noteworthy
and is deserving of this award
the Honolulu Police Department is honored to present
the Honolulu Police Department's Warrior Bronze Medal of Valor to Officer Mark Jines
