what is an expander?
An expander is exactly the opposite of what a compressor is.
It makes the dynamic range of the signal larger by making soft sounds even softer and therefore
increasing the dynamic range.
A "gate" is a type of expander, which also makes sound below the threshold softer.
The only difference is that an expander works with a ratio
and that a gate works with an amounts set in decibels,
that makes the amount of level below the threshold softer.
So we can set how many dB we want the sounds to be softer.
Gates and expanders are often found in one unit or in one plugin device.
Also certain manufactures have made gates a part of a compressor,
where you have a compressor and a gate in one unit.
this is also commonly found in plugins.
there's also dynamics-plugins which actually have a gate/expander and a compressor in them ;
all in the same plugin or in the same unit.
if you wanna know more about gates check out the advanced gating and expander
tutorial that i'm going to do on friday, where i'm gonna go a little bit more
in depth about the functions. and don't forget the checkout this whole season
which is about dynamic processors, like compressors and a lot more
So I hop to see you soon and thanks for watching!
