COMM: 18 year old Emma Pickles from Halifax
UK, has become an internet sensation through
video makeup tutorials, which she posts online.
Emma transforms herself into celebrities,
fantasy figures, and movie characters, on
her YouTube Channel, which reaches a global
audience of millions.
00:22
EMMA: Some people paint to chill out and some
people read. I like to do make up. It's just
fun for me.
00:31
EMMA: I kind of have a face that I can kind
of mould into anything anyway.
00:35
COMM: But two years ago Emma's life was very
different and she struggled in social situations.
00:41
EMMA: I've always been quite quite, but during
my last few years at school it kind of became
a problem. I was afraid to like ask questions
and it was really holding me back.
00:50
EMMA: I just developed this horrible social
anxiety.
00:54
COMM: Emma was inspired to make her own video,
after watching a makeup tutorial on YouTube.
00:58
EMMA: I found a video online and I tried it.
I think I actually said in my first video,
how nervous I was about just talking to the
camera.
01:07
EMMA: Just playing with makeup that was I
kind of realised that, oh I can do this. It
sounds really big headed but I did kind of
have a natural talent in it.
01:15
LIZ: She's overcoming things, she's doing
things that she would never expect to do.
It's overcoming shyness having to do these
things, to pursue a career.
01:23
EMMA: But like this year I kind of enjoyed
it, I kind of just enjoyed talking to new
people and it's nice to be able to do that.
01:30
COMM: With her confidence bolstered, Emma
was introduced to her boyfriend Brad.
01:34
EMMA: We started to get to know each other
online, we'd been friends for a while, we've
known each other for ages, since around June
time really last year.
01:43
EMMA: It's nice, it feels like a proper relationship
rather than just a school relationship.
01:48
COMM: Now, one and a half million views later,
Emma's videos have more than thirty thousand
subscribers from all over the world.
01:56
EMMA: One of them is nearly on half a million
views now, and that, that just blows my mind.
Why are that many people watching my videos.
It's a nice feeling to know that your work
is appreciated.
02:08
EMMA: And obviously any artist who puts their
work out there in the world is scared of being
judged. So it's nice that people are nice.
02:17
EMMA: And then that's it
