Powerful quake strikes Mexico. Soon after midnight on Wednesday, June 30, a strong 6.2-magnitude
temblor hit Oaxaca state in southern Mexico, resulting in one fatality as residents awakened
and in many cases fled into the streets. Centered 120 kilometers from Oaxaca city, the earthquake’s
tremors were felt throughout the states of Veracruz, Puebla, and Guerrero. As far as
355 kilometers away in Mexico City, people reportedly poured into the streets in their
pajamas, as nearly 100 guests left the city’s Hotel San Francisco when lamps began swinging
in the 14-story building. Meanwhile, at least seven aftershocks occurred, and ambulances
and police helicopters were sent to assess damage, which included cracks on the exterior
of several buildings, as well as disrupted electricity and water connections.
Our sympathies for the life lost as we thank all officials for your prompt initiatives
to ensure the safety of the Mexican people. May the day soon arrive that such disasters
are forever forgotten as humanity’s gentler ways help restore Earth’s stability.
