100 years ago, in the small city of Pedro Leopoldo (State of Minas Gerais),
has been born the most famous medium of Brazil: Chico Xavier.
"Arquivo N" ("N Files"), in two special reports, will homage this man who, for some, was a saint; and for others, a great enigma;
man who has psychographed hundreds of books and messages;
who had been nominated for Nobel Peace Prize;
who left a great legacy of charity and love for neighbor.
Today's program we will talk about the journalists' challenge
who tried to decode the enigma "Chico Xavier" himself.
The Enigma.
In 1910, when Chico was born, Pedro Leopoldo,
which is less than 100 km from Belo Horizonte (capital city of State of Minas Gerais),
had about 5000 inhabitants.
A small city well quiet: a typical small village,
that suddenly became renowned dues to the unexpected fame of medium Chico Xavier.
What is my impression about Chico? - resuming shortly his trajectory -
Poor boy.
Mulatto.
Son of illiterate parents.
Born in the interior of State of Minas Gerais,
who first becomes a national scandal
when he writes on the paper messages signed by spirits.
And as long as time goes, after being attacked, pursued, ridiculed, prosecuted,
he becomes a pop-idol, a myth.
My father did not agree about voices that I heard
and the priest whom I confessed
advised me to accept a job - I was 10 years old -
or else my father, worried about what I said, would intern me in a sanatorium.
Since I was just few years old, I've learnt to worship Our Lord Jesus Christ
with the faith that my mother has conveyed to me since when I was 2 years old.
I've learnt to consider Jesus as Our Lord and Master.
Chico had such great faith
that he believed that he was permanently accompanied by his spiritual guide Emmanuel
whom he always quotes.
And he had such great faith
that he had relinquished his peace, his tranquility, his money, to engage his task.
His task was to disseminate Spiritism
and the charity in Brazil.
So, as journalist, I bet on this point of view
and without judgment, without adjectives,
I gave to the readers freedom and responsibility as well, of taking their own conclusions.
Is it truth? Is it untruth?
Is it madness?
Is it deceit?
Left hand on his face as long as right hand scribbles sentences on pieces of paper.
Chico, I love you, I adore you.
Nair Bello began to admire, even more, the medium
in 1977, after receiving this message
a letter that - she claims - her son has dictated to Chico in 10 paragraphs.
Manuel Francisco Neto narrates details about the car crash in which he died
and he comments events that neither the family remembered
of the individuals cited in the letter.
They are individuals who had died many years ago
and my husband, who had been born in Limeira (city of State of São Paulo),
had to go to Limeira, to ask my mother-in-law and his aunt, who were those people (cited in the letter)
because my husband did not remember.
And they have confirmed.
Well, in fact, I decided to write Chico's biography because of it is newsworthy.
15 years ago, I did an article about a spiritist theatrical play named "Além da Vida"
which was a blockbuster: over 2 million people had watched the show.
And when I studied to do this article, I realized that the "center of this universe" was Chico Xavier.
I also realized that there wasn't a Chico Xavier's journalistic biography.
And who was Chico Xavier?
A man who had written over 400 books,
have sold over 20 million copies
and have donated all copyright profits to charitable institutions,
because he said: "The books don't belong to me.
"I didn't write anything.
"Spirits wrote."
All these psychographed books are part of today's respectable literary work
which have sold over 25 million copies.
"Nosso Lar", for instance, which describes how the life is in other dimension,
has been published in several languages.
In Brazil, "Nosso Lar" have passed 1 million copies sold.
Francisco Cândido Xavier, according to spiritists,
is the Latin America's most read author.
The researcher Clóvis Nunes, from Bahia, who is devoted to paranormal phenomena researches,
he is an expert on Chico Xavier's psychographed books.
On average, he produced 6 books per year
and there are books with such diversity of subjects.
He produced novels, tales, essays, moral allegories, chronicles, poetry
with varied styles.
So, a single mind couldn't create this diversity of subjects.
After the break, the phenomenon of psychography.
We'll back soon.
