Hi, I’m Emily Ruby, curator at the Senator John Heinz History Center, and this is
Toys of the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s.
In 1903, Benjamin Franklin Bain started the Wolverine Supply and Manufacturing Company
on Pittsburgh’s North Side. It was originally a tool and dye manufacturing company but he
bought out the Sandy Andy Toy Company in 1909 and began exclusively producing a line of
sand toys. They specialized in metal fabrication but by the ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s, they
had also started expanding into plastic toys.
And they also had toys for girls at this point, like the Sunny Suzie line of household appliances
and toys for boys like this Texaco gas station and this marble game with a space theme.
