Erik: What did you like most about being a production assistant?
Kyung: Well, you know it was a very humbling experience to go from being a staff person
at the World Bank where I had my own office, I had my own telephone, I had my own secretarial
support, to being a production assistant and really fetching coffee and ripping scripts
and running around and never mind the financial consequence it was really a humiliating thing.
It was interesting though because I think in journalism there still a very much an apprentice
mentality so you kind of have to pay your dues that way. It’s not like you can get
five PhDs in broadcast journalism and kind of coast into a job, so you really do have,
you have to learn the trade. And so I had to learn, how do you take reality and translate
it into a video format, how do you become a compelling storyteller, how do you sift
through so many facts and try to condense it into a minute and a half story. So, I was
- it was very good learning ground for me and that was probably the most fun.
