This is John Kohler with OKraw.com. Today I have another exciting episode for you. We're
goanna answer one viewers question that I got it in email, or a YouTube comment or a
Facebook comment. I can't remember where I got it because I was looking up for it so
I could actually read it verbatim but I can't remember where it was last, so we're just
goanna answer the question from what I remember. So, one of the viewers wrote and said, 'hey,
John, I need your help, man. Raw food is causing my face the wrinkle.' So, what it is specifically
that I guess the viewer started eating a plant-based diet with a lots of fruits, and some vegetables,
and you know small amounts in nuts and seeds, but not a lot, but no avocado and no coconut
or something like that. So, like very low fat and I guess she has been seeing that her
face is getting more wrinkled than when she started, and you know this is not a good thing
when your face because that, in my opinion, definitely means something and, in my opinion,
raw foods actually anti-aging and, you know, will keep your skin nice and supple, if done
properly. I mean, any diet could definitely mess you up if not done properly. So, we're
goanna answer my question on this. So, the thing is, you know, in a raw foods are, even
in a 'sad diet,' you want to have a balanced diet. I don't know about a balanced standard
American diet. I guess for me a balanced standard American diet would be lots of fruits and
vegetables and a little bit everything else, and that would be fairly balanced, maybe.
But anyways, if you're goanna eat a high raw diet, then I recommend you lots of fruits
and vegetables and, you know, also get your nuts and seeds, you know, many raw food a
styles might advocate no overt fats, or little, you know, overt fats, and very little if any
nuts or seeds. So, you know, while I'm not necessarily goanna say no overt fats, I'm
not goanna say, on the other hand, there's like the gourmet raw foodists, which they
do like way too high in fat, you know. The balance is somewhere between too much fat
and too little fat. Now, where is that? In my opinion, you know, I like to do up to,
you know, about 20% fat, maximum 25% of calories from fat. So, what does this mean? On a daily
basis, I eat maybe one or two handfuls of nuts and seeds a day, and/or avocado, and/or
coconut, and I alternate each and every day, and I'm always eating different foods. I'm
not eating like coconut today, coconut tomorrow, you know. I'm eating like coconut today, I
had tahini dressing last night for dinner, and the previous night before that I had a
macadamia nut dressing, and I usually eat my nuts blended up so that I get better digestion.
I love them in the evenings, you know, during my nice large one-pound salad meal. So, I
think, you know, definitely, fats, in my opinion, and getting the right kind of fats are very
important in a raw foods diet. You know, I want to really encourage you guys to seek
outs omega-3 fatty acid nuts and seeds, actually. So, if you're goanna eat some nuts, you know,
maybe go for the walnuts instead of the almonds. If you're goanna eat some seeds, maybe go
for the flaxseeds or the (pepperchia) instead of like the sunflower or the sesame because
they tend to have more omega-3's, and I've seen, and including myself, you know, some
people, they get their fatty acid profile done, and they are far too many omega-6 's
and that's the problem with the standard American diet. Far too much 6 and not enough 3's, and
even in my diet that I pay attention to, I wasn't as good on the 3's as where I'd like
to be. That being said, if you do eat no overts, no overt over fats, then your 3:6 balance
actually has a high probability of actually being in range normally, because you're eating
a lot a leafy greens, you know, with your fruits, and the leafy greens actually have
a lot of 3's in there, but the problem is when you start eating nuts that contain omega-6's
like almonds, it'll be like 2000:1 omega-6 to omega-3 so if you're eating nuts, or almonds,
you're jacking up your ratios. So, in my opinion, you know, eating enough fats in a raw foods
diet is absolutely critical, you know, and I try to go no more than 25%. I kind of keep
it in the range between 15 and 20 and that's kind of what I feel best. If I go no overts,
you know, it's cool, I could do it for, you know, couple days and I do you do that sometimes,
and, you know, I feel best between 15 and 25. Go too much, and I'm kind of feeling sluggish,
like I don't want to do nothing tonight and I feel like a sloth. So, you don't want to
eat too many fans for any reason. So, that's one thing, because, I mean every cell of our
body, I mean, our brain is mostly comprised of fat. Every cell in our body is fat, and
fat is plump, you know. I mean, I'm not so plumped here, but if you don't got that plumpness,
you know, that might be one of the reasons for the wrinkles, you know. Another reason,
in my opinion, that's just probably far more critical is this one, and I talk about this
a lot on my show, is stay hydrated. Very important, whether you're eating a standard conventional
diet or you're eating a raw diet, whether you're eating a half vegan, half raw, whatever
diet you're eating, whether you're eating a paleo diet, I don't care. You need to stay
hydrated. We are 70 to 75% water. If we're not eating foods that are at least that water
percentage or higher, the food can dehydrate us, especially if, you know, we're out in
the hot weather and evaporating water, like I'm sweating right now. I'm losing water,
and I need to take in more water because of this. So, it's very important to stay hydrated.
Just because you're eating a fruit and vegetable diet does not necessarily mean that you're
getting all the moisture or water you need from your fruits and vegetables. You know,
on a daily basis I drink copious amounts of juice, to some people, sometimes. I mean today
I had forty-five ounces. Most days I might drink from 32 to 64 ounces. On some days I'll
drink 128 ounces of juice along with fruits and, you know, vegetables in my standard salad
for dinner. So, you know it's a lot of liquid I'm getting. On those days attend a drink
less water. That being said, upon rising in the morning I generally like to drink 32 ounces
of water, and before going to bed I like to drink 32 ounces of water. That way when I'm
sleeping I'm fully hydrated, and when I wake up I'm fully hydrated, and then after that
water 'runs out' and I feel hungry, that's when I finally eat my breakfast, and that's
usually happening around noon, actually, because I don't like to eat in any particular times,
but you know I'm eating lots of fruits and vegetables, and if you're eating 2 apples
a day, you know, and maybe some lettuce, in my opinion you're not getting enough, you
know, liquid from just the food you're eating, you know. So, it's very important to drink
supplemental filtered water. I don't recommend you guys buy bottled water in plastic bottles.
Plastic's atrocious. It takes millions of years to break down, if ever. I recommend
you guys get a good filtration system for your house, so that you can filter the water.
That's fairly good except for the chlorine and fluoride in some municipalities, and maybe
some of the toxins that are in there, but if you get filter system you can filter that
out and have pure water at your tap, for free, much less expensive than, you know, the environmental
cost, and actually the cost out of your pocket for buying bottled water. And the last thing
I want to say is that, to me, the raw foods diet is totally anti-aging and anti-wrinkle.
I mean, you know, keep your skin nice, soft and supple, and actually cooked foods, and
especially certain kinds of cooked foods, will prematurely age you much faster and give
you wrinkles faster. I mean, we've all seen those smokers, you know, old lady smokers,
or old men smokers, for that matter, 70 or 80 years old that have been smoking cigarettes
their whole life. I mean, they have a lot more wrinkles and somebody that hasn't been
smoking, and, you know, that's just what smoke can do to you, but cooked foods also does
that to you to a much lesser degree. I mean, for example, if you cook foods, you can create
carcinogens such as heterocyclic amines, AGE's, or advanced glycerin end products, and this
is one where heating things at high temperatures and actually just heating, the fact of heating
meat will produce toxins in itself, so if you don't eat meat, or eat much less meat,
you're goanna create less toxins. If you cook your food at lower temperatures instead of
higher temperatures you're also goanna create less toxins. So, you know, if I was to cook,
which I do not cook my food, the best ways to cook your food are actually by boiling
or steaming. That's goanna not create these high-level of toxins. You know, heating anything
above 450 degrees is not a good idea. In my opinion, you want to do it at a low temperature.
Of course frying and microwaving your food, in my opinion, are the worst ways by for to
cook foods. I personally think that, you know, if you're eating, you know, some steamed and
boiled food along with a lot of raw foods, you know, and they're whole, plant-based foods,
I personally think you can be a lot healthier than everyone else. I personally choose to
just eat all raw foods because that's kind of just what I've been doing for a long time,
and it's working for me but I always encourage you guys to find out what works for you, and
if something's not working right, you know, reach out ask people, but more importantly,
you know, do some research on your own and try different things, you know. So, try drinking
more water, try drinking more fresh juices, which is literally, you know, extracted water
from the plants. I like to drink coconut water actually keep me hydrated instead of just
bottled water, because coconut water is nature's filled water, electrolyte rich water, containing
vessel... Wessel. Alright, so, I hope you guys enjoy this quick episode about why raw
foods is potentially giving so many wrinkles. I hope it's helpful and you could stay more
hydrated eating more fresh fruits and vegetables and be anti-aging instead of pro-aging. Once
again my name is John Kohler with OKraw.com. We'll see you next and remember, keep eaten
your fresh fruits and vegetables. They're the best.
