Just as the political system of post-independent states were structured by the legacy of colonialism,
so too was the economic structure of the countries conditioned by colonization. In general, colonialism
restructured domestic economies towards the production of primary commodities like agriculture,
mineral resources, and oil. Colonialism also tended to concentrate wealth in relatively
few hands. This week, we're going to look at the key ways in which economic development
was conditioned by the colonial project, and how postcolonial states struggled to overcome
the impact of colonization. We'll also examine the experience of the Newly Industrialized
Counties and the Green Revolution, and ask what they can teach us about development.
