A train carrying 350 people in France derailed Friday, reportedly killing at least eight
people and injuring dozens more in the process.
The train was headed for the city of Limoges when it went off the rails in an accident
officials say caused "many casualties." (Via Sky News)
The crash came at a time of day when the suburban Paris train station is normally busy — which
has authorities concerned about the number of injuries and deaths going up. (Via CNN)
"The train broke in two, decoupled, some of it kept going. But some of it, a couple of
carriages derailed and came off on their side at high speed onto the platform." (Via BBC)
The Guardian says four of the train's seven carriages actually came off the tracks.
Rescue workers are working to get passengers out of the mangled wreckage. (Via The Guardian)
According to France 24, media reports indicated passengers were trapped on the train and that
some had been electrocuted.
The train was said to be a regional service that traveled slower than express trains.
But witnesses said this particular train was moving unusually fast as it came into the
station. (Via Al Jazeera)
The cause of the crash isn't yet known. Authorities say a "red alert" has been activated.
